Dan Gingras and Michael Sterling

Michael Sterling and Dan Gingras are local photographers based in Portsmouth and Rye respectively. Their subject matter preferences span many genres. The main topic that attracts both of their photographic interests is travel photography. Dan and Mike have traveled extensively and will speak about their combined experiences. Their talk at the Rye Art Study on October 21, 2024 at 10 am, is where they’ll share insights into how to approach travel photography while on the road, as well as how to prepare for a trip and what to bring/not bring.

Michael Sterling has been interested in photography for more than 40 years, becoming seriously involved with artistic imagery after moving to the New Hampshire Seacoast. He appreciates the vibrant, collaborative artistic community where there are opportunities to become involved with photographers and artists at all levels of experience. He is a past president of the New Hampshire Center for Photography and a juried artist in the New Hampshire Art Association, as well as a member of the Kittery Art Association.

The subjects he most enjoys photographing include architecture, seascapes, environmental portraits, and travel.  He has been a contributing photographer for local print and online newspapers and magazines. In addition to artistic images and portraits, he was a photographer for local events such as PortsmouthNH400, TEDx Portsmouth, the New Hampshire Film Festival, the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, and True Tales Live.

Sterling is often asked why he photographed a particular subject.  The simple answer is that something caught his eye or grabbed him emotionally. He is drawn to light and shadow, patterns, and colors. Environmental portraiture is where he endeavors to capture emotion and moments in time.

Dan Gingras started his photography career as a newspaper photographer, following in the footsteps of his father who was a war photographer and his grandfather who was a newspaper editor for a French language paper.   Seven years of professional photography for newspapers and magazines, he decided to move to the technology field in the early 80’s by going back to school and getting a masters and doctorate in computer science.  Later the disciplines of making images and digital technology merged giving him the perfect background for his passion.   In retirement he is the director of the New Hampshire Center of Photography, and lives in Rye.    He travels extensively with his wife throughout the world focusing on architecture and wildlife.   Although he does exhibit his photographs, he eschews the title professional photographer, preferring to focus on creating images as a passion.  His travels have taken him to Africa, Tahiti, Galapagos islands, Iceland and all over Europe.

Michael Sterling and Dan Gingras will be presenting to Rye Art Study at the Rye Congregational Church on Monday, October 21, 2024 at 10:00 AM.  Refreshments will be available starting at 9:30.
