Picturing the Isles of Shoals:

150 Years of Artistic Fascination

by Christopher Volpe

You know about Childe Hassam and Appledore, but there are many other artist’s who’ve made gorgeous paintings of the Isles of Shoals – both before and since. In this slide show, Chris Volpe takes us through a history of painting on Shoals from the classical European tradition of the late 1700 through Romanticism, Impressionism, and right up to the present day. This survey of styles and artists offers vivid glimpses of the Isles of Shoals through time while encapsulating a mini history of the American landscape painting tradition.
